Study Guide for Dewberry's Quiz on Killer Queen

The story follows a group of four high school girls of various backgrounds as they research the history of the famous murder of a pageant queen in their town.

The genre of the film is campy horror and takes inspiration from films such as the Fear Street Trilogy, Black Swan, The Craft, and Breakfast Club. Killer Queen also includes elements of comedy and horror/mystery, inspired by Scream and Scooby-Doo.

It's like a John Hughes and Stephen King mashup.

Killer Queen is a campy 90’s horror comedy. We start off in the glitzy pageant world in 1985 and then transition to a 1995 breakfast club-like environment. In this heartwarming and heart-stopping film, we explore how our preconceived notions and personal history hinder us from growing. The story features typical high school stereotypes that poke fun at old high school movies. Later, we find out that these characters are deeply rooted in honesty and sincerity, making these characters dynamic and lovable. This film stars mainly women and LGBTQ characters, but in an effort to normalize these types of stories in the media, we have chosen not to make a story about women and LGBTQ people but with them. This is not a story pushing a narrative but normalizing one through the means of comedy, horror, relationships, and spectacle.

The proof of concept has been filmed. We cut down the first 20 pages and made a short film and trailer using other short scenes from the film. The short Is being submitted to festivals and will be used to gain an audience and platform for the feature.

Ms. Dogwood 1985 Runner-Up

Dorothy Jean/Harry Walker

Dorothy Jean is the drag persona of Harry Walker who competes in the Miss Dogwood pageants. Rival to Shirley Williamson. She murders Dorothy in a fit of jealousy. Dorothy is seen out of drag as Harry Walker, who is now in a psych ward after Shirley’s murder.

Ms. Dogwood 1985

Shirley Williamson

The town’s local starlet and the consistent winner of then Miss Dogwood pageant. She and Dorothy have been in competition with one another in every pageant going back 30 years. She is a well-liked and beautiful woman.

Captain of the Soccer Team

Cameron Walker

Dorothy Jean’s granddaughter. She is a soccer player and focused on her game. Cameron faces judgement from her community because of her family history. She is constantly trying to overcome the infamous legacy Dorothy Jean has placed on her family. She and Meredith are locked in an ongoing generational feud that they are forced to address when they are put in the same group for their class project.

Head Cheerleader

Meredith Godfrey

Shirley Williamson’s granddaughter. She is the popular, mean girl cheerleader. Because of Shirley’s murder, she is coddled and pitied by the entire town. She is extremely reluctant to work with Cameron and the rest of their group. Her father is the chief of police, and she feels the pressure of her family’s status and expectations for her. Love interest to MJ.

Resident Stoner

Mary Jane Jefferson (MJ)

MJ doesn’t care much about school and just wants to have a good time. She is also a part of the group project. She comes from a working-class family, but she doesn’t care about the social hierarchy that the town subscribes to. Throughout the course of the film, she and Meredith discover their affection for each other.

Teacher's Pet

Patty Sue Ficher

Type-A nerd. Patty is overly prepared and excited for this project; she knows all about Dorothy Jean the Killer Queen. She possesses a sweet innocence that bonds her to Cameron. Patty is the brain of the operation, heading the research about the murder. Through embracing the chaos of the project and bonding with the other girls, Patty begins to realize that her academic success does not define her.

Airhead Cheerleader

Erin

Meredith's best friend and fellow cheerleader. Erin is bubbly, a bit of an airhead, and most importantly she follows Meredith’s lead. She has a disdain for people whom she feels fall below her in the social hierarchy of high school. Although she dulls out insults to her fellow classmates, Erin is not without a heart. After getting dragged into the group’s situation she becomes one of the girls.

Lovable Stoner

Beck

MJ's best friend and fellow stoner. Beck is goofy, fun-loving, free, and easy. She has a knack for getting into trouble thanks to her inability to focus and her lack of fear of all weird things. Her head is usually in the clouds, but she proves that she can snap to action when the situation calls for it. Following the girls into a heap of trouble Beck proves herself to be an essential part of the group.

Mr. Dewberry is everyones favorite teacher. He likes to get on his students level and have a good time time in class. Does he play favorites? Of course not...but if he had to choose, Cam is absolutely his favorite. He loves sushi and causing drama in class by putting rivals in the same group project.
